The end of this incredible trio?
Edgerrin James, star running back for Indianapolis Colts, may end up wearing another uniform next year.  This past off-season he signed a 1-year franchise deal, but was unable to secure a long term extension.  It looks like the Colts are ready to move on, save some money and draft a new running back and in the meantime go with Dominic Rhodes as the feature back.

Rhodes definitely is a serviceable back as he rushed for over 1100 yards his rookie year in 2001, substituting for James while out with an injury.  The problem is the Colts went 6-10 that season, and that had been the only season the Colts missed the playoffs during this recent Manning/James/Harrison era.  Obviously, James has been paramount to the Colts success.  Since 1999, the Colts are 77-35—70-26 when he plays, 7-9 when he doesn’t, according to the Star.  Look at the bright side the Green Bay Packers won it all while not having a dominant running game, led by Edgar Bennett with 899 yards in the 1996 season.

NBA All-Star game 2006 logo
This year’s all-star game will be held in Houston, and they’ll have their two stars starting for the Western Conference team.  The starting line-ups for the Western Conference are:

G Steve Nash
G Kobe Bryant
F Tracy McGrady
F Tim Duncan
C Yao Ming

Yao, beat out Bryant in a close race for overall top vote-getter.  The will face off against the Eastern Conference whose starting line-up will be.

G Allen Iverson
G Dwayne Wade
F Lebron James
F Jermaine O’Neal
C Shaquille O’Neal

The injured Jermaine O’Neal will likely sit out of the game, paving the way for Rasheed Wallace as the starter.  The coaches for the game will be Flip Saunders of the Detroit Pistons and Avery Johnson of the Dallas Mavericks.  The reserves will be selected by the NBA coaches and announced on February 9th.

Katrina Superdome

NFL head honchos are finally contributing to the effort of rebuilding the tattered Superdome in New Orleans.  This comes almost a month after the Saints said that they will be spending all of their home games in New Orleans.  This seems like a drop of water that’s part of a lake after learning that it will take and estimated $153 Million to fully repair the Dome.  Luckily, 90% of it will be covered by state insurance and FEMA, while the remaining $29 Million will have to be paid by the state.  I sincerely hope that the Saints give them something to cheer about after having suffered so much.

Bettis Get's Key to the CityBettis gets the key to Detroit.  He joins the ranks of

my hero

South Park villain, Saddam Hussain - former Iraqi dictator.  Back in 1980, Detroit gave the ex-president of Iraq a key to commemorate his kindness and cooperation with the West.  Rev. Jacob Yasso, who ran Chaldean Sacred Heart church in the Motor City, stated this recently when asked why they gave Saddam a key.

Bettis, Detroit’s poster child this winter, had this to say about his association with Hussain:

“I don’t know that I’ll be sharing that with Saddam. I think they canceled his key. They changed the locks on that one.”

Doug FlutieFor years, Doug Flutie has been known most for his “Hail Flutie” play back in his Boston College days.  That will surely be one of the most talked about plays for many generations.  The 1984 Heisman Trophy winner now has something else to be remembered by.

Earlier this season, in a meaningless game versus the Miami Dolphins, Flutie executed the first drop kicked extra point since 1941.  There wasn’t a soul in the stadium - aside from the Patriots - that expected that play.  Hence, the net to catch extra points and field goals wasn’t set up.  A lucky fan made off with a heck of a souvenir - one for the record books.  Flutie deserves to have this token of history back and the guy deserves to be compensated.  What does he want?

1. Payment of ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND ($100,000.00) DOLLARS [lawyer’s capitals] on delivery of the football.

2. A guarantee of eight (8) season tickets for 25 years in the end zone (preferably sections 142 or 143).

a. The season tickets will be paid for annually by my client at the then going price for season tickets. The Patriots would not be expected to pay for the tickets.

3. Delivery by the Patriots to my client sometime in September, 2006, of a Tom Brady Patriots’ football jersey signed by all the team members as of the beginning of the next football season.

You would have to be an idiot to request that of any organization.  The Pats have declined the “offer.”  Now this moron holds a piece of history that no one will care about in a few years.  Heck, we already have it on film.  That’s enough for me.  Patriots should release a statement of their own: “Shove it.”

Michelle Gears up for the 8th timeMichelle Wie is teeing up for an 8th straight time against the men.  This time it will be in the Asian Tour’s SK Telecom Open in May.  The tourney will be held in South Korea, where Wie’s parents are from.  Her grandfather Wie Sang-kyu still resides in Jangheung, a South Korean city where a locals used to pass the hat to support his granddaughter.  No need for that now, since Wie has plenty of sponsors.  Her failures on the Men’s tournaments have been well documented.  She failed to make the cut in all seven so far.  Who cares? I finally have a reason to tune in if she does qualify.

Jason Giambi at press conference say sorry for his mistakes
I couldn’t believe why Bob Klapisch, writer of the Record (N.J.) newspaper, would write about Giambi’s comeback last year without bashing his actions from the past.  Giambi has been given a pass by Major League Baseball and the rest the media, who only were down on Giambi during the 2004 season when he was not performing up to his high salary standards.  Yet it is a double standard when he makes a comeback in 2005 and performs well, suddenly people turn a blind eye that he was a steroid abuser, and did not have to pay the price of a suspension for his actions.

In the beginning of last season, we as fans kept hearing that the steroid policy is working and that MLB were suspended all these minor league players and fringe bench players that most fans weren’t aware of.  The only two players that was of any name status were Minnesota Twins relief pitcher, Juan Rincon, and OF Matt Lawton.  The hammer hasn’t gone down on the all-star type players, with the exception of Rafael Palmiero, which I feel is a travesty.  Major League Baseball is obviously still protecting their own, and doing a half-hearted attempt to make things right regarding steroids.

To say that attention was deflected away from Giambi because of the Palmiero/ McGwire hearings are preposterous, because if Giambi were at the hearings, he would have denied the accusations himself also.  Then he would have been vilified as Palmiero is.  I normally wouldn’t touch upon this subject, but it makes me angry, that Giambi would be praised for bouncing back from a terrible ‘04 season, basically because his body adjusted to not having steroids in his system and found a happy medium of non-detectable substances in ‘05.

Mark Cuban celebrating a winBelieve or not, the Dallas Mavericks are getting it done with some defense.  In their last 10 games, opponents have all scored under 100 points.  With their winning streak they have tied themselves for the Southwest division and Western Conference lead. Last night’s game versus the Grizzlies they were able to sneak out a victory by Dirk Nowitzki getting a superstar call and went to the line to put them up by one.  Mike Miller of the Grizzlies could have won the game at the buzzer but his lay-up shot missed when he lost the handle of the ball for a split second.  Owner Mark Cuban definitely has been a happy camper lately.

That is an amazing accomplishment, by Epiphanny Prince of Murry Bergtraum High School in New York City.  Just like her namesake, it might have been divine intervention that allowed her to see the basket so clearly.  Epiphanny broke the high school girls record previously held by Cheryl Miller, famous sister of NBA star Reggie Miller, by scoring an unbelievable 113 points.  Cheryl once scored 105 points as a high schooler in California.

The final score ended up being 137-32 victory over Brandeis High School.  Now critics must ask the question how many assists did Epiphanny had, because they sure asked Kobe that question.  Good grief, how bad of a team Brandeis must be, why didn’t they just quadruple team this girl?

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at press conference
The NBA’s all-time leading scorer is trying to teach the Lakers big men a few things about basketball.  The pupils that he is taking under his wings are Andrew Bynum, Chris Mihm and my favorite punching bag Kwame Brown.  Kareem has high hopes for Kwame Brown especially, thinking he can be a perennial all-star if he gets his act together.

Kareem was optimistic and shared his thoughts on Kwame Brown:

Kwame has so much talent.  That’s a guy who suffered from not going to college. He’s a physical specimen and a hardworking guy who’s making progress. He’s getting a lot of offensive rebounds, keeping the other big guys off the boards, doing the little things.

“When I saw him, I thought, Karl Malone II. He hasn’t gotten there. I hope he does.”

Wow Kareem - as good as the Mailman Karl Malone? We’re going to hold you to that.  I’m going to stick to my gut in that Kwame Brown’s career will be closer to other #1 draft pick bust Pervis Ellison rather than Karl Malone.
